Is anyone else sick of Justin Skillings always winning?

It was a crisp and beautiful autumnal day when the unmistakable stench of employee competition rent the air last Thursday for the Walter Invitational Cornhole Tournament. Challengers from several departments descended upon the Orem Family Fitness Center to determine who would be this year’s Great Cornholio.

A smattering of seasonal treats were laid out for the refreshment and nourishment of our contestants and while the snacks were enjoyed, the only thing they were actually hungry for was victory . . . and in some cases revenge.

Matt Petersen Jr. of Development Services marched through the winners bracket undefeated. He laid waste to local cornhole luminaries such as Kurt Falkenthal, Nate Prescott, Pete Wolfley, and even beat eventual champ Justin Skillings in a barnburner where Matt squeaked out the the 36-34 victory.

Justin Skillings, also of Development Services, took the scenic route to get to the championship as he was cast into the loser’s bracket in the 2nd round of the tournament by none other than Matt Petersen Jr. Justin showed true character of spirit when he didn’t let his early setbacks deter him from his ultimate goal of adding more mall bucks to his ridiculous purse of winnings from various contests this year. Justin has won so many things this year that people are getting him confused with urban forester and non-stop winner Josh Story.

In the championship round, Justin had to beat Matt twice in a row to claim the victory. Justin went into cornhole beast mode and just started dropping bag after bag on the board and eventually tucked Matt into bed with a warm glass of milk and a pat on the forehead. Many present felt like Justin’s tennis grunts helped him conjure up the extra focus and courage it required to face and defeat Matt “Bone Saw” Petersen Jr.

A big thank you to everyone who participated and we look forward to seeing you at the next Wellness Committee activity.
