What It’s Like to Win the Hawaii Trip

Public Works Technician and Good Vibes Guy Tim Lino was the lucky Hawaii trip winner in 2018.

With the annual employee appreciation party this next week, there is one question on everyone’s mind: who is going to win the Hawaii trip?

We wanted to know what it is truly like to win such a massive prize so we reached out to past winners of the trip and asked them a few questions about this unforgettable moment in their time with the City of Orem.

  • What’s it like when you hear your name called for the Hawaii Trip?
“I was flooded with emotions from numb to super excited, disbelief, happy and nervous. Nervous because I hate flying haha. I think I actually cried when nobody was looking hahaha.”
  • Do coworkers treat you differently once you’ve become a Hawaii trip winner? How?
“They only treat you different for a week or so. Everyone happily hates you but all in good fun. It eventually dies down until you come back from the trip. Then it starts again for another week. But it’s worth it.”
  • In what ways does winning the Hawaii trip change your life?
“It’s a “free” trip to paradise. That in and of itself is life changing. The word free was in quotations because I still spent a ridiculous amount of money out there. Again, totally worth it.”
  • What would you like the rest of employees to know about winning the Hawaii trip?
“Save save save. Save money. Don’t skimp on anything out there. Don’t eat at McDonald’s. And if you do, don’t post it on social media. You will be scolded by everyone you know and It’s not pretty.”
  • Has your luck continued since winning the Hawaii trip or has it been all downhill since then?
“I’ve been married for 17 years to my best friend.  I have 4 beautiful kids. I work with a bunch of guys I consider family. And I’ve won the Hawaii trip from Orem City. I’m the luckiest guy here.”
  • If you could pick one current employee to win the trip, who would you pick and why?
“Due to my undying loyalty to my colleagues, I’d have to say anyone in the Streets Section of Public Works. They are the ones I work closest with on a daily basis and can say without any doubt that any one of them deserve that award.”
  • How do you feel about the annual employee party now that you can’t win the Hawaii trip again?
“I still love the party. I love all the employee appreciation get-togethers we have. Whether it’s city wide, department, or our employee of the quarter Award we have in our section. I love seeing that all of our hard work does not go unrecognized. The anticipation that comes after the words “and the winner of the Hawaii trip giveaway is……” still comes even though I can never win again. It’s still nice to see the winners face because I know exactly how they feel.”
